Do I Really Need Travel Insurance?
Do I really need travel insurance? Is travel health insurance truly necessary? These are the age old questions, and the answers are deceptively simple. No, you don’t need travel health insurance as long as you have an uneventful, mishap-free trip. When that’s not the case, however, you’ll rue the day you decided to forego it.
Travel health insurance is a good idea for just about any trip. If you are leaving your home country, it is an absolute necessity. Too often people take ill while on vacation and only then discover that their medical insurance from home will not cover their bills incurred while abroad. They are then faced with mountains of expenses and must often call upon family members to help out so that they can get at least emergency treatment abroad before being transferred back home.
People fall into a false comfort zone believing that all foreign countries will operate on the same rules as their home country. They assume that if they are hurt or sick, foreign hospitals will treat them without regard to cost. This is a fallacy, unfortunately, and the truth is that in many countries foreigners will not be treated in the hospitals or medical facilities unless they can present proof of their ability to pay. Without travel medical insurance to pick up the tab, often a significant delay will be encountered in receiving treatment while family members are contacted and someone is located who will guarantee the payment of medical bills.
Transfer back home is another area that can run up some hefty expenses. Suppose you suffer a serious injury while backpacking through Europe. Maybe you fall down a flight of steps while leaving a pub and break both of your ankles. Obviously it is going to be difficult for you to take a commercial airliner home since you will probably have pins and screws in both ankles and be unable to bear your weight on them for several weeks. You will need to be transferred home via private medical aircraft, and such a transfer can present a major expense – far more than you would believe and far more than you or your family may be able to pay. Travel medical insurance will often contain riders for this sort of thing, and with a guarantee of payment provided by the insurance company, obtaining transfer home after your surgery will be trouble-free. Without such coverage, you could wind up stuck in poor accommodation for as long as it takes to get you up on your feet and capable of travelling home by commercial airliner, which could amount to weeks.
With the ample availability of high quality travel insurance online, it is easy to do a travel insurance comparison either to obtain travel insurance online or at a brick and mortar travel insurance company. So there is no reason to take anything more than the most basic local trip without having at least some cheap travel insurance that includes the basic medical-related cover for your holiday trip. Just do your research including an online travel insurance comparison to obtain the best travel insurance online or elsewhere for your needs. You want to make sure you are getting the best deal for your money, and there should be no reason to ever take a trip again without having at least the basic insurance cover required to provide for your own peace of mind. Knowing you are insured, at least for the costly possible medical expenses, allows you to relax and enjoy your holiday worry-free. And isn’t relaxation the whole purpose of taking a holiday in the first place?
