Keeping your fuel costs down
Oil prices seem to be stealing the money right out of your pocket. What’s an Aussie to do? Well, here are a few fuel saving tips that will help you keep more of your hard-earned cash.
Drive smoothly. That means don’t try to keep up with the airplane above you. Save fuel by accelerating slowly, braking smoothly and over a longer distance and by combining trips. Driving around for one or two small purchases is not only a waste of fuel, but also a waste of your time.
Shop around. Fuel oil prices vary between stations. Websites like MotorMouth can help you find a station near you, with the best fuel oil prices. Check back frequently, as prices sometimes change daily, based on the price of oil, as well as the strength of the dollar.
Other fuel savings tips include keeping your car serviced so it’s operating in top form and sparing the air conditioner unless it’s absolutely necessary.
Perhaps one of the more extreme fuel saving tips, is to buy a new car. Hybrids are very popular now, but purchasing a new vehicle just to save money on fuel might have a long payback timeframe.
Fuel oil prices don’t show any sign of coming down any time soon. Using the fuel saving tips, shopping around for the best petrol or diesel prices and keeping your car in top shape will all help.
Finally, don’t forget the most basic tip of all to help save fuel and that is don’t drive if you don’t have to. Can you ride with a friend or use the bicycle? How about public transport? Maybe you won’t use an alternative every day, but a trip saved here and there will make a difference.
